My Crochet Teacher
My mother, Leta in the 70's  (1945 - 2002)

My mother always had a crochet hook in her hand for as long as I can remember, she taught me how to crochet a basic chain at around 6 or 7 years old, I never learned anything more than the chain until she was diagnosed with cancer and I decided I better learn all there is  from her and soak up her knowledge as much as I can. I tried to make an afghan, it was about 5 foot long and 20 rows in, she looked at it pulling it all out to almost the beginning. She would then crochet it all over for me in 4 times the speed that it took me to get that far.

To say the least,  I was discouraged by crocheting and decided at that time it wasn't for me. I just don't get it. I took over her quilt that she was making for my daughter at the time instead.

It wasn't until she passed away and I inherited all of her yarn did I realize i need to use this stash up! I started making an afghan with just left over yarn she had on stash, it wasn't enough for an afghan at all so I turned it into a scarf. Then I heard I was going to be a great Aunt and then I started on a real baby afghan with left over baby yarn my mother had, it turned out great. After finishing, I was told my nephew and wife did not want any more blankets, so I placed it in a box. I decided what the heck I will make another one for her first birthday, and I again placed it in the same box.

I started making what is called Amigurumi, pumpkins and ghosts and then the search was on for little projects I could finish in a day. I just had to make a doggie sweater it was a bit odd, I will try again at a later date. What doesn't turn out right I toss in the box, I named the Misfit Box, even though not all the items are misfits. I have joined what they call Crochet A Longs to help me improve on my crocheting skills!

My first attempt at these squares. As you can plainly see I have a hard time getting them square. I think if I would have made a couple more at the same time that maybe one out of three would have been square. It takes me a couple times to get things worked just right.
